Iphone 5c

I'm thinking of getting the unlocked 5c. I currently use a cheap "go" phone from att with basic services that include unlimited messaging. It's a pretty cheap plan that I use and I'm wondering if I can use the same payment plan for my "unlocked" 5c. Is this what the advantage of having an unlocked device?
