What does a phone need to run 4G?

So I'm looking at some phones online (cheap ones) because I have decided to get away from the Evil of CDMA and join the International GSM! :-)



Anyways, for a phone to run 4g, does it just need to run the right Frequency or is there an actual 4G responder or something inside of the phone besides the freq?
