Transfer Contacts from a Samsung Galaxy SIII to a Samsung Galaxy S5

Transferring Contacts Using Your Google Sync:

One of the most common methods of transferring contacts from one Android smartphone to another is to sync the contacts with a Google account that is used on both smartphones. To do so:

  1. Sign in with your Google account on the Galaxy S3

  2. Press "Menu" while on the home screen

  3. Tap "Settings"

  4. Under "My accounts", select "Google"

  5. From the main account, tap the email address or user name

  6. Clear / mark the check box next to "Sync Contacts", or tap "Sync now"

  7. Switch over to the Samsung Galaxy S5 and sign in with the same Google account

  8. Tap "Apps" while on the home screen

  9. Go to "Settings"

  10. Under "User and backup" tap "Accounts"

  11. Under "My Accounts", select your account

  12. Tap your account and press "Menu" > "Sync all"

  13. The contacts from the SGS3 should now be available on the SGS5

Transferring Contacts using Import / Export:

You can export the contacts from your older Samsung smartphone in the form of a vCard file, which can then be transferred to the Samsung Galaxy S5 via email or with the help of a computer. To perform this method you first need to back up the contacts on your SGS3:

  1. Tap the "Contacts" app on the S3's home screen

  2. Go to the "Contacts" tab

  3. Press "Menu" > "Contacts to display" > "All contacts"

  4. Press the "Menu" key and tap "Import / Export"

  5. Select "Export to SD card". The filename will appear, make sure you remember it

  6. Tap "OK"

  7. Open your email client and attach the resulting VCF file to a new email

  8. Send the email to your own email address

  9. Pick up the Samsung Galaxy S5 and open the email, then download the attached VCF file

  10. Launch the "Contacts" application and tap "Menu" > "Import / Export" > "Import from SD card". Select an account if necessary; search for the vCard file and select it to import its contents

NOTE: if you don't want to share the VCF file via email, you can connect both smartphones to your computer via USB, and transfer the vCard file manually, from the Samsung Galaxy S3's memory, to the Galaxy S5 SD card. Then, import the file on the SGS5 as explained above.

Sending Contacts through "Send Anywhere":

In case you're searching for an application to transfer your contacts with, then "Send Anywhere" is probably the way to go. The app performs file transfers over a P2P connection, meaning that you are not required to have access to a computer. To perform this method:

  1. Visit the Google Play Store and install "Send Anywhere" on both smartphones

  2. Open the app on both the S3 and the S5

  3. On the sender device (the Galaxy S3), tap "Send" > "Contacts"

  4. Mark the contacts that you wish to share and tap "Send"

  5. Select a method of transfer. You can tap "Receive" on the Galaxy S5 and enter the randomly generated code from the SGS3. Alternatively, you can tap "Generate QR Code" on the Galaxy SIII and scan the code with the SGS5's camera to commence the transfer
