Nokia 2610 memory is "protected" and I can't transfer contacts from phone to sim

Hi. My partner has an old Nokia 2610 and wants to move the sim to another phone. Most contacts are stored on the phone. When I try to move these to the sim it refuses with the message "phone memory protected". We've checked the settings and Free memory is shown as 335kb. There doesn't seem to be an option to "unprotect" the phone memory. As far as we know, the only pass code is on the sim card when the phone boots up.
