How do you think about cell phone text messaging monitoring programs?

A parent provides a cell phone to a 14 year old teenage child. The child is sending and receiving hundreds of text messages per day. The child deletes the massages. The parent gets a software program that allows them to monitor the child's cell phone from a computer and then the parent is able to read every message. How do you think about it?
