How-to: Set Up Your Email, Link Inboxes, Send, Reply and more on the Nokia Lumia 1020

Setting Up Your Email:




  1. Swipe left while viewing the Start screen

  2. Scroll to and then tap "Settings"

  3. Tap "email + accounts"

  4. Select "add an account"

  5. Select the desired email account type, such as "Microsoft account"

  6. Tap "next" and tap the "Microsoft account" field and enter the desired email address

  7. Touch the "Return" button on the on-screen keyboard

  8. Type in the password for the email

  9. Tap "Sign in" and select whether or not you wish to sync and back up your Microsoft account automatically




Linking Multiple Mailboxes in a Unified Inbox:




  1. While viewing the Start screen, tap the "mailbox" tile

  2. Tap the "menu" icon depicting three horizontal dots

  3. Tap "link inboxes"

  4. While in the "other inboxes" list, select the inboxes that you wish to link

  5. Touch "rename linked inbox" and type in a new name for the unified mailbox

  6. Tap the "Done" icon depicting a checkmark




Unlinking Unified Inboxes:




  1. While viewing the Start screen, tap the "unified inbox"

  2. Tap "menu" (three horizontal dots) and touch "linked inboxes"

  3. While viewing the "this inbox" list, tap the inboxes that you wish to unlink, and then tap the "unlink" icon




Deleting a Mailbox:




  1. Swipe left on the Start screen and tap "Settings"

  2. Touch "email+accounts"

  3. Tap and hold the mailbox that you wish to delete, then tap "delete"




Sending an Email:




  1. From the start screen, tap the "Mail" tile

  2. Press the "+" icon and then select an account (assuming that you have linked inboxes)

  3. Tap the "+" icon to add a recipient from your contacts list. Otherwise, type in the recipient's email address. Note: to remove a recipient, tap the name and then press "Remove"

  4. Write the subject and the desired message in the appropriate fields

  5. If you wish to attach a file, tap the "attachment" icon depicted as a paperclip. Browse for the desired file or alternatively, you can also take a photo by pressing the "Camera" icon and pressing "accept"

  6. When ready, tap the "Send" icon




Reading an Email and Saving an Attachment:




  1. When you receive an email, you can quickly read it by pressing the "email" tile on the Start screen

  2. Tap the mail in your mailbox. You can pinch or spread on the screen with two fingers in order to zoom in or out

  3. Tap the attachment if you wish to save it (and if available)

  4. Press the "menu" icon and then tap "save to phone"




Replying to an Email:




  1. While viewing the Start screen, tap the "Email" tile

  2. Open the email that you wish to reply to

  3. Tap the "reply" button. Note, you can tap "reply all" if you wish to reply to all of the recipients, assuming that there are more than one

  4. To forward an email, tap "forward"




Deleting an Email:




  1. Access your mailbox

  2. Tap to the left of the emails that you wish to delete

  3. Mark the checkboxes associated with the emails that you wish to delete

  4. Tap the "trash can" icon




Viewing Mails Separately:



Mails are normally grouped by title in conversations that also include replies. To view all your mails separately:




  1. While viewing the Start screen, tap the "email" tile

  2. Tap the "menu" icon (depicting three horizontal dots) and tap "Settings"

  3. Bring the "Conversations" switch in the "off" position




Writing an Email Using Voice Recognition:




  1. On the start screen, tap the "mail" tile

  2. Touch the "+" icon and select an account (assuming that you have linked inboxes)

  3. Tap the "+" icon to add a recipient

  4. Tap the "Subject" field, press the "microphone" icon and speak the subject

  5. Tap the message box, tap the "microphone" icon and say your message

  6. Touch the "Send" icon when ready
